NEW YEARS LOW RESOLUTION - "THE DECEMBER 25 CHALLENGE"
DECEMBER 2011

For this years MOJO Christmas card, Creative Director Matt Oakley set himself the challenge of creating illustrations of festive characters using just 25 pixels. It's a style he's been using for recently for his "Pixelebrity" designs, where he illustrates pop-culture icons with an arrangement of 5x5 coloured blocks.

For the Christmas card Matt has created Santa, Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman using this minimalist style, which he says proves that simplicity is often key to successful design.

"It's not as easy as it might seem," says Matt, "the difference between the graphic working and not working is often just the colour of a single block, if you don't get every square correct, no-one will see who it's meant to be".

The Pixelebrity Range is available to buy on T-shirts through online store Redbubble. There are blocky representations of Elvis, Mr T, Freddie Mercury, Bob Marley, Batman, Avatar, Superman, The Hulk and Optimus Prime.

More designs are planned in 2012, and will include more portraits of stars of TV, music, books, comics and film. Matt plans to roll the designs out onto other products including mugs, posters and greetings cards. "There's been a lot of interest in the Pixelebrity designs. I'd be interested to hear suggestions for characters people would like to see".

If you can suggest a character you'd like to see "Pixelebrated", email matt@mojostudio.co.uk, and if you'd like to buy Pixelebrity tshirts go to www.redbubble.com/explore/pixelebrity
